Some masks represent a single emotion.
This one represents the moment all of them arrive at once.
The Storm Face is divided — deliberately, structurally, permanently. The upper half: white, clean, elaborately carved with spiral eyes that look inward more than outward. The kind of white that Buddhist tradition associates with purity, with clarity, with the state before something happens. The calm before.
The lower half: dark, weathered, wave-pattern carved across every surface, white accent lines running through the grooves like lightning through storm clouds. The kind of surface that looks like it has been through something — many things — and carries the evidence of all of them without apology.
The division is the point.
This is not a mask of pure rage or pure peace. It is the face of something that contains both simultaneously — that has learned to hold contradiction without needing to resolve it. The spiral eyes on the forehead watch everything from a place of stillness. The fangs below are ready. Both things are true at the same time.
In Japanese Noh theatre, the most powerful masks were the ones that could shift expression depending on the angle of the light — tilted down they showed sorrow, tilted up they showed menace. The Storm Face operates the same way. In warm lamp light the white sections glow and the dark recedes. In cool daylight the dark dominates and the white becomes the detail. It is always showing you something different.
The fangs are not the most interesting thing about this mask.
The eyes are.
Look at them long enough and you will understand what this object is: not a representation of something external, but a mirror for something internal. The storm that lives in the upper half and the storm that lives in the lower half are not at war with each other.
They are the same storm.
